The Payment Committee works to advance fair payment for physical therapy services in Illinois.

Report to: The IPTA President and Board of Directors. Written reports to the Board of Directors should be submitted for the meetings and the Assembly of Representatives, and as requested.

Committee Composition &Term: The main committee is comprised of a chair that is appointed by the IPTA President and approved by the IPTA Board of Directors. The Chair serves a two-year term for no more than two consecutive terms. At large committee members are selected by the Chair to represent both the work place setting and geographical (district) diversity that comprises our membership.  Various subcommittees/work groups focus on specific areas of payment/reimbursement.   

Position Objective: To provide advice and counsel to the Board of Directors regarding activities or policies that can enhance the position of physical therapists in the current or future reimbursement environments. This advice and counsel addresses both the appropriate reaction to reimbursement issues as well as the pro-active planning for, and promotion of, appropriate methods of reimbursement in the future.

Specific Responsibilities:  

  • Monitors and provides comment on proposed regulatory and legislative changes from various sources in Illinois for potential effects on physical therapy payment.
  • Serves as primary contact to IPTA members with payment or practice, and regulatory questions that affect payment or practice for physical therapy services.
  • Forward billing, practice and all other pertinent documents to chapter office to be posted on IPTA website.
  • Attend payor update seminars and visit payor websites to keep track of any major payment or practice changes that may affect physical therapy in Illinois.
  • Assist in planning and execution of educational events related to payment issues for various audiences including payers and payees.

Time Commitment:  Time commitments vary based on the responsibilities assigned by the Chair.  Serving as Chair requires approximately 8-10 hours of work per month.  Most meetings are held via conference call as needed and most work is conducted via email.  Some attendance at governmental meetings may be required (usually held in Chicago or Springfield).

Qualifications: Must be an IPTA PT, Retired PT, Life PT, PTA, Retired PT, Life PTA, SPT, or SPTA member in good standing. In order to be successful in this role, basic computer skills and experience and knowledge of billing, coding, and documentation is desirable.  Many of your assignments will be time sensitive; it is important to be organized and able to meet deadlines. 

Training and Support: The Chapter office provides annual volunteer orientation as well as ongoing administrative and clerical support for the committee.  Access to resource documents and information is available through  In addition, you will have opportunities to participate in APTA’s various training opportunities that are relevant to your role. This may include programs/webinars and conferences relating to payment and reimbursment.

The IPTA also recognizes that there may be occasions when conflicts arise. If such circumstance occurs, please consult with the IPTA President and Executive Director.

Evaluation: The IPTA BOD President or the Payment Committee Chair will contact you before the completion of your term for feedback on your volunteer experience. This will be used to update this job description, develop appropriate materials, and effectively orient future IPTA volunteers.
