Physical Therapist & Physical Therapist Assistant Students

The Illinois Physical Therapy Association has long standing relationships with the physical therapy and physical therapy assistant schools in Illinois. While you may not be a resident of Illinois, except during your attendance at one of the schools in Illinois, when you join APTA you will be asked to select a state chapter as well. Most students, whether they plan to continue to live in Illinois after graduation, choose the Illinois chapter during their student experience. We're glad to have you here in Illinois! Not a member of APTA and IPTA? You're missing out on so many resources that will help you jump start your career!

Students have an opportunity to become involved with IPTA, even while they are still in school. The IPTA districts welcome students at meetings and events sponsored at the local level. Some districts even have special "student days” where the program is centered on the needs of student PTs and PTAs. You don't need to wait until you've graduated to become involved in the greater physical therapy community – the people you meet when you're a student will someday be your future employers, co-workers and fellow volunteers.

At the state level, we have several opportunities to become involved and reach out to your future colleagues. You can become part of committees, attend our annual lobby day, help organize student events, serve as a representative to the IPTA Assembly of Representatives and attend CE geared for students. The faculty members at your school will be glad you asked about opportunities to get involved. The IPTA Student Conclave is a great opportunity for you to network with students from other schools, learn about future employment opportunities, and get helpful advice on resumes, interviews, and employment contracts. The Student Special Interest Group is another way to get involved. Running for student office will help advance your leadership skills and prepare you for your career.

You can also access the resources of the American Physical Therapy Association to expand your view of the physical therapy world. Events like APTA's National Student Conclave offer unmatched experiences for PT students. APTA offers essential services to its PT student members, like access to a database of more than 35,000 newly published health sciences books and software titles—complete with peer reviews, publications and access to APTA staff experts who can help you with your questions about practice, reimbursement, education, and research.

Career Starter Dues
As of the fall of 2014, the Illinois Physical Therapy Association (IPTA) has joined the American Physical Therapy Association's Career Starter Dues program. The program was developed in the spring of 2014 to support early career members as they transition from student membership into full membership by drastically discounting their membership dues for recent graduates (from 2010 and later). To learn more about the program and whether or not you qualify, please visit us at our Career Starter Dues page here.
