Get Involved: Early Career PT & PTA Board Liaisons

The Early Career Board Liaisons are non-voting positions to the Illinois Physical Therapy Association (IPTA) Board of Directors. The individuals are appointed through the IPTA Board of Directors with nominations coming from the membership

 


 

Report to: The IPTA President and Board of Directors. Written reports to the Board of Directors  and the Assembly of Representatives as requested.

Term: The Early Career Board PT and PTA Liaisons are appointed by the IPTA President in consult with the Executive Committee and with the approval of the Board of Directors to serve a two-year term for no more than two consecutive terms.
 

Position Objective:  The positions were created to ensure that new professionals (those within the first 5 years of practice) have a means to communicate with the IPTA Board of Directors so that they may convey the issues facing new professionals today.  The Early Career Board Liaisons represents this important group at meetings of the IPTA Board of Directors.  

Benefits: By providing input on issues impacting new physical therapy professionals, you will help the Board of Directors make decisions that could impact the future of the Physical Therapy profession, and your own future.  You will have the opportunity to network and work with seasoned PT professionals who will serve as mentors for your professional development.  This role will help to prepare you for future leadership positions, both in the association and in your career.

Specific Responsibilities:  In addition to representing the new professionals in discussions at meetings of the Board of Directors, the Early Career Board Liaisons participate in a variety of activities.  Areas of involvement of past/current members in these positions have included participation in membership and communications programs such as:  iMAP, student presentations, Facebook, New Connections events and contributing content to the New Connections e-newsletter. The Early Career Board Liaisons are encouraged to participate in the IPTA Assembly of Representatives and APTA leadership activities.  

Time Commitment:   The amount of time dedicated to the responsibilities varies based on the programs and projects the Early Career Board Liaisons are assigned to/ volunteers for.  

Qualifications: The Early Career Board Liaisons are defined as a physical therapist and a physical therapist assistant  in the first five years of his/her career. This individual should meet the following criteria: (1) licensed as a PT or PTA from 1-5 years (2) a member of APTA for at least 2 years, with preferably continuous membership as a student (3) a current IPTA member and (4) possess a current physical therapy license in the State of Illinois.

Training and Support: The Chapter office provides annual volunteer orientation as well as ongoing administrative and clerical support for the committee.  Access to resource documents and information is available through www.IPTA.org.  In addition, you will have opportunities to participate in APTA’s various training opportunities that are relevant to your role. This may include programs/webinars relating to leadership development, membership and more.

The IPTA also recognizes that there may be occasions when conflicts arise. If such circumstance occurs, please consult with the IPTA President and Executive Director.

 

Evaluation: The IPTA BOD President will contact you before the completion of your term for feedback on your volunteer experience. This will be used to update this job description, develop appropriate materials, and effectively orient future IPTA volunteers.
