The IPTA annually appoints one member to serve as our Federal Affairs Liaison (FAL). FALs are responsible for providing grassroots input to the APTA's Government Affairs Department, and for disseminating information to their component.

Report to: The IPTA President and Board of Directors. Written reports to the Board of Directors  and the Assembly of Representatives as requested.

Term: The Federal Affairs Liaison (FAL) is appointed by the IPTA President in consult with the Executive Committee and with the approval of the Board of Directors to serve a 1 year term terms.

Position Objective:  The FAL is responsible for providing grassroots input to the APTA's Government Affairs Department, and for disseminating information to the IPTA and their membership.

Benefits: FALs serve as the link between the state chapter and APTA's Government Affairs Department on federal issues. FALs serve as part of a network of dedicated grassroots activists to bring physical therapy issues to the attention Members of Congress and other policy makers.

Specific Responsibilities: FAL Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Provide input from the chapter/section to APTA's government affairs staff.
  • Disseminate information to the grassroots membership from the APTA Board of Directors and government affairs staff.
  • Assist in the identification of potential APTA key contacts from your chapter. FALs to APTA sections do not have this responsibility since Key Contacts are identified at the state level.
  • Attend regular component meetings to relay legislative and regulatory information.
  • Help recruit participants for APTA advocacy events, such as the Federal Advocacy Forum, rallies, practice visits, fundraisers, or other grassroots activities.
  • Coordinate practice visits in your state by bring members of Congress into different physical therapy practice settings.
  • Attend political events, with the assistance of PT-PAC in your state.
  • Coordinate with the state legislative chairperson on component grassroots networks, policy development, and identification of emerging issues.

Time Commitment:   The amount of time dedicated to the responsibilities varies based on the legislative agenda of the APTA. FALs are asked to contact their members of Congress on particular issues of concern to their patients and the physical therapy profession.

Qualifications: Must be an IPTA PT, Retired PT, or Life PT, PTA, Retired PT or Life PTA member in good standing. Many of your assignments will be time sensitive; it is important to be organized and able to meet deadlines.  An advanced understanding of the physical therapy profession.  

Training and Support: The Chapter office provides annual volunteer orientation as well as ongoing administrative and clerical support for the committee.  Access to resource documents and information is available through  In addition, you will have opportunities to participate in APTA’s various training opportunities that are relevant to your role. This may include programs/webinars relating to leadership development, membership and more.

Recourse: The IPTA places great value on the relationship between members, staff, and businesses working together to further our mission. The IPTA also recognizes that there may be occasions when conflicts arise. If such circumstance occurs, please consult with the IPTA President and Executive Director.

Evaluation: The IPTA BOD President will contact you before the completion of your term for feedback on your volunteer experience. This will be used to update this job description, develop appropriate materials, and effectively orient future IPTA volunteers.
