Through serving as an IPTA leader, you can add your fresh ideas to be blended and molded into new initiatives and challenges for the association. Our leaders are the many dedicated professionals that work together to help drive the future for the physical therapy profession in Illinois -- and even the nation through the work of our delegation to the APTA's House of Delegates.

The IPTA invites those who are passionate about the profession to apply for leadership positions. Nominations are NOW being accepted.

You can nominate someone for a positions (or multiple positions) or declare your own interest in running for a position you feel exceptionally qualified for. 

Right now, you have many opportunities to step up and be a leader.  Chapter, District and Student SIG elections will take place concurrently this spring -- check out the Dates to Remember on the right.

Chapter Positions up for Election

Vice President (January 1, 2021-December 31, 2022) 2 year position, eligible for second consecutive term of 2 years
The Vice President serves as a member of the IPTA’s Board of Director’s Executive Committee. The Vice President also serves as the Chair of the IPTA’s newly formed Illinois Physical Therapy Foundation (501(c)3) as well as the Vice Speaker of the Assembly of Representatives. The responsibilities of the President include attending and participating in all (5) board meetings per year and (4-6 per year) executive committee meetings, chairing the (2-4 per year) meetings of the IPTF, and vice-chairing the pre and post meetings of the Assembly. In person or virtual attendance is acceptable, with the exception, of the Assembly of Representatives, where in person attendance is required.

In addition to filling in as needed for the President, the Vice President may be assigned additional responsibilities by the IPTA President. This may include attending political events or district events/meetings, chairing or serving on a taskforce or workgroup, or solo work on a specific initiative. For the IPTF, the Vice President (as Chair), will help the foundation move forward on its strategic plan, which was developed in early 2016. For the Assembly, the Vice President (as Vice Speaker) fills in as needed for the Speaker, and assists the Speaker at the annual Assembly.

The ideal candidate for Vice President should be passionate about the physical therapy profession and be interested in how the IPTF will help advance research and education to the benefit of the public. Strong organization/time management skills, ability to communicate effectively, and ability to complete tasks on time are important attributes for a person serving in this important position. It is estimated that it takes approximately 8-10 hours per month to effectively hold this position. In state travel may be required but usually does not require overnight stay.

Secretary (January 1, 2021-December 31, 2022) 2 year position, eligible for second consecutive term of 2 years
The Secretary serves as a member of the IPTA’s Board of Director’s Executive Committee. The Secretary also serves as the Secretary of the IPTA’s newly formed Illinois Physical Therapy Foundation (501(c)3) as well the Secretary for the annual Assembly of Representatives. The responsibilities of the Secretary include attending and participating in all (5) board meetings and (4-6) executive committee meetings, as well as attending and participating in the (2-4) meetings of the IPTF and pre/post meetings of the Assembly. In person or virtual attendance is acceptable, with the exception of the Assembly of Representatives, where in person attendance is required.

The primary responsibility for the Secretary in all three roles is to keep the minutes for all meetings and ensure that they are recorded with the IPTA and APTA. In addition, the Secretary may be assigned additional responsibilities by the IPTA President, IPTF Chair and the Assembly Speaker. This may include attending district events/meetings, chairing or serving on a taskforce or workgroup, or solo work on a specific initiative.

Nominating Committee (January 1, 2021-December 31, 2023) 3 year position
The responsibilities of committee members include soliciting nominations; contacting nominees for consent to serve; and attempt to secure at least two candidates for each open position for District elections. They also promote Association, Chapter, and District leadership opportunities and professional development activities to Illinois members. The committee is comprised of three elected members (one elected each year to a three year term) and the senior member serves as Chair.

Delegate at Large (January 1, 2021-December 31, 2022) 2 year position, eligible for second consecutive term
Delegates serve as members of the Illinois Delegation to the APTA House of Delegates. They also participate in pre and post House meetings and solicit member input on issues to come before the House of Delegates.

Chapter and District leaders take office on January 1, 2021

District Positions up for Election

All positions are for a term of 2 years (January 1, 2021-December 31, 2022) with the exception of Nominating Committee, which may be a 2 or 3 year term.

For Central, Eastern, North Central and Western Districts:  Vice Chair, Nominating Committee, Delegate, Assembly Representative. (Western will be electing a Sec/treasurer for a 1 year term).

For East Central, Northern, Southern, and West Central Districts:  Chair, Secretary/Treasurer, Nominating Committee, Assembly Representative


District Chair (January 1, 2021-December 31, 2022) 2 year position, eligible for second consecutive term of 2 years
The District Chair is a voting member of the IPTA’s Board of Directors and presides over local district meetings. As a member of the Board of Directors, the chair attends board meetings (5-6 meetings annually) and represents the district’s perspectives on issues by contributing their knowledge, insight, and experience to discussions that help implement the IPTA’s strategies and priorities. At the local level, the chair facilitates meetings and events that can provide members with updates and news on APTA and IPTA initiatives, educational opportunities, advocacy, and networking opportunities. The chair is responsible for preparing and submitting District reports on these activities to the Chapter’s Board of Directors and Assembly of Representatives as requested. The chair also serves as Senior Assembly Representatives for their District at the IPTA Assembly of Representatives. The chair should recognize their districts individual needs and establish district committees, chairs and members to accomplish local goals. Responsibilities of the chair also include appointing individuals to fill vacant District officer and nomination committee positions, and district member representatives to Chapter Committees.

District Vice Chair (January 1, 2021-December 31, 2022) 2 year position, eligible for second consecutive term of 2 years
The District Vice Chair is responsible for assuming the duties of the chair when that person is unable to fulfill duties or a specific duty (i.e. attending a specific meeting or event). The vice chair maintains the District Rules of Order so they are in compliance with the Chapter Bylaws and coordinate the location for District meetings and communicates with the Chapter office.

District Secretary/Treasurer (January 1, 2021-December 31, 2022) 2 year position, eligible for second consecutive term of 2 years
The Secretary/Treasurer is the official correspondent of the District and works with the Chapter office to communicate information to District members. The secretary/treasurer keeps an accurate record of meeting and educational program attendance, helps prepare and track the District’s annual budget, and ensures that all District records are kept and retained in accordance with Chapter policies. 

District Delegate (January 1, 2021-December 31, 2022) 2 year position, eligible for second consecutive term of 2 years
Delegates serve as members of the Illinois Delegation to the APTA House of Delegates. They also participate in pre and post House meetings and solicit member input on issues to come before the House of Delegates.

District PT & PTA Assembly Representatives (January 1, 2021-December 31, 2022) 2 year position, eligible for second consecutive term; Some District may be electing Representatives to serve a 1 year term (2021) to help us get back on schedule of electing 1/2 of representatives each year.
The Assembly of Representatives is the IPTA’s largest body of governance and directs the future of the IPTA in its consideration of bylaws, policies, positions, and priorities. The two year term of PT Assembly Representative involves attending the annual Chapter Assembly and representing District PT members in the conduct of the Assembly business. District representatives participate in pre and post Assembly conference calls and activities, and assist District chairs in facilitating discussions at local meetings that can lead to ideas debated at the Assembly. District representatives attend and vote at the annual Chapter Assembly. Representatives also report the Assembly outcomes to the District via emails and presentations at local meetings.

District Nominating Committee (January 1, 2021-December 31, 2023) 3 year position, eligible for second consecutive term
The responsibilities of committee members include soliciting nominations; contacting nominees for consent to serve; and attempt to secure at least two candidates for each open position for District elections. They also promote the Association, Chapter, and District leadership opportunities and professional development activities to the District members, and communication with the Chapter Nominating Committee on a regular basis.


Those elected will be invited to participate in leadership development and orientation opportunities, attend board and district meetings, and take part in program development and budget planning beginning in September, 2020. This way new leaders have a hand in gathering the information and materials needed to dig in and get started on January 1st.

Clincal Educators SIG Positions up for Election

Academic Vice- Chair (January 1, 2021 - May 31, 2022) 2 year position
The Academic Vice-Chair shall be either a Director of Clinical Education (DCE), or an academic faculty member who is actively involved in the clinical education program in an accredited Physical Therapist or Physical Therapist Assistant Program. The Vice Chair shall assist the Chair in the discharge of duties; oversee the CESIG tasks forces and committee. The Vice CHair shall be responsible for coordination of meeting and activitites with the Secretay. The Vice Chair will represent the CESIG at the Chapter’s Assembly of Representatives.President shall serve as the designated spokesperson of the SSIG. *Must be a member of IPTA's CESIG

Secretary/ Treasurer (January 1, 2021 - May 31, 2022) 2 year position
The Secretary/Treasurer shall either be a Director of Clinical Education (DCE), an academic faculty member who is actively involved in the clinical education program in an accredited Physical Therapist or Physical Therapist Assistant Program, a Site Coordinator of Clinical Education (SCCE), or a Clinical Instructor (CI). The Secretary/Treasurer shall coordinate the development of a slate of qualified candidates for election as SSIG officers; be responsible for keeping the minutes of all CESIG and submitting all meeting minutes to the Chapter office; notify CESIG members of meetings and prepare an annual budget based on available funds and make written financial reports to the CESIG membership and to the Board of Directors upon request. The Secretary/Treasurer will represent the CESIG at the Chapter’s Assembly of Representatives. *Must be a member of IPTA's CESIG

Geriatric SIG Positions up for Election

Chair (January 1, 2021 - May 31, 2021) 1/2 year position (Special Election)
The Chair shall be responsible for preparing agendas for all GeriSIG and Executive Board meetings, preside at the meetings of the GeriSIG and the Executive Board and shall prepare the annual report and any other reports as requested by the Chapter. The Chair shall serve as the designated spokesperson of the GeriSIG. The Chair will represent the GeriSIG at the Chapter’s Assembly of Representatives, and meetings of the Chapter Board of Directors. *Must be a member of IPTA's GeriSIG

Vice Chair (January 1, 2021 - May 31, 2022) 2 year position
The Vice Chair shall assume the duties of the Chair at the request of the Chair or in the absence of incapacitation of the Chair and oversee the GeriSIG committees as well as assist the Chair in the conduct of the GeriSIG activities and assignments. The Vice President shall also be responsible for compliance of Bylaws and reporting bylaw changes to the Chapter’s Board of Directors. The Vice Chair will represent the GeriSIG at the Chapter’s Assembly of Representatives. *Must be a member of IPTA's GeriSIG

Secretary/ Treasurer (January 1, 2021 - May 31, 2021) 1/2 year position (Special Election)
The Secretary/Treasurer shall coordinate the development of a slate of qualified candidates for election as GeriSIG officers; be responsible for keeping the minutes of all GeriSIG and Executive Board meetings; submitting all meeting minutes to the Chapter office; notify GeriSIG members of the date, time and place of the GeriSIG meetings; oversee programming of meetings and activities/events; prepare an annual budget based on available funds and make written financial reports to the GeriSIG membership and to the Board of Directors upon request; and maintain the GeriSIG’s archives and correspondence.
