MEET A MEMBER: Tim Rylander, PT, EdD(c), MPT, OCS, CBIS,
IPTF Board Member & REVITALIZE Speaker

The IPTA is proud of our fascinating and influential members who are working hard towards advancing the physical therapy profession.

The IPTF has recently restructured their leadership board and appointed a few more members to serve on their Board of Directors. Click here to view the current IPTF leaders.

One of the new faces on IPTF's Board is Tim Rylander, PT, EdD(c), MPT, OCS, CBIS.

In addition to serving on IPTF's Board, Dr. Rylander is a featured program speaker at the upcoming REVITALIZE conference - and has spoken at past IPTA conferences.

In getting to know Dr. Rylander a little more, we asked How do you feel the REVITALIZE Conference adds value for our Illinois members?

Rylander: I believe the REVITALIZE conference is a hidden gem among continuing education opportunities in Illinois. This conference allows for terrific collaboration and networking. It allows for a wide variety of content giving clinicians a chance to reach beyond their comfort zone and explore new concepts. For someone like me who has “professional ADD” the conference provides an opportunity to cover a range of topics including geriatrics, pediatrics, neuro, ortho, wellness and nutrition. I look forward to attending REVITALIZE every year either as a presenter or as a participant; it feels like an annual reunion of some sorts.

As a clinician in private practice, how do you view the IPTA's priority with getting direct access passed in IL?

Rylander: I think the IPTA has done tremendous work in the effort to gain direct access in Illinois.  Illinois has a difficult political landscape to navigate and our association has fought hard to gain the right for our clients to have access to competent care without having to deal with the time, cost, and bureaucracy of the traditional system.  Unfortunately, I have seen the situation where an individual tries to circumnavigate the system, ends up in the care of some opportunistic practitioner and far too often ends up paying a significant amount for subpar, or questionable care.  Our profession is being threatened by a myriad of others who benefit from some form of direct access (massage therapists, personal trainers, chiropractors, etc).  Why shouldn’t physical therapists, as licensed professionals receive the same opportunity to provide care?

Direct access would be a tremendous benefit for our practice.  Being a small business, we thrive on community involvement and clinical reputation.  A majority of our clients make their way into our office to see “Tim” or “Kamila” not solely because of the name on the door.  The landscape of healthcare is rapidly changing, and we are all witnessing a movement towards huge healthcare conglomerates.  These organizations are putting up walls and barriers making it more difficult for our clients to reach us; affording us the ability for direct access would minimize some of these obstacles and ultimately could drive down the financial burden placed upon many of our clients.

Dr. Rylander, If you had the attention of all the Members, what message would you like to convey?

Rylander: My biggest message to members is to get involved!  I started working with the IPTA through education, being a speaker at the REVITALIZE conference and since then I have had the honor of being both an assembly representative and serve on the board of directors for the IPTF.  The IPTA offers a multitude of ways to get involved and it doesn’t always require a significant time commitment.  Helping out is easier than you may think and often a little bit can go a long way.
