Global PT Day of Service

As future and current physical therapists, our profession thrives on improving the lives of others. On Global PT Day of Service, we display the incredible impact our profession has on communities around the world. What began as an idea near the Amazon River in Peru has developed into a global project. Over the past two years, this annual day has brought together nearly 8,000 volunteers in 42 countries to help improve communities through volunteerism and acts of service.

In February of 2015, Efosa Guobadia, PT was completing health volunteer work in Peru when the idea came to him. He imagined a day in which all members of the physical therapy profession, including clinicians, students, and other staff, came together and gave back to communities around the world. With the birth of his idea, he emailed Josh D’Angelo, PT in order to share his vision.

Upon reading Efosa’s email, Josh stated that he had a visceral response. “This is something we not only should do, but something we need to do,” he thought. Together, Efosa and Josh began a movement that has sparked connections, kindness, and love throughout the physical therapy profession around the world. They have reinforced our professional bond and facilitated conversations about how we as a PT community can keep our profession and the communities we serve growing strong.

This year, Global PT Day of Service will take place on Saturday, October 14, 2017. As members of the physical therapy community, you are invited to think global and serve local as we come together to positively influence communities around the world.
