Advocacy is Needed Now to Fight the 9% Cut to Medicare

We need every PT/PTA in Illinois to devote 5 minutes to advocacy! Together our voices can make a difference.

Background: CMS has finalized the 2021 Physician Fee Schedule, in it they have increased reimbursement for evaluation and management codes (codes mostly used by primary care physicians). Because Medicare is mandated to be budget neutral, when reimbursement goes up in one area there must be cuts to other areas. The cuts are going to affect multiple providers, but PT specifically is looking at a 9% cut. This is slated to go into effect on January 1, 2021. There is still time to fight this, but time is running out.

Medicare is over 25% of case load for most PT clinics. And history has shown that when cuts happen to Medicare other insurers often follow suit. This could be devastating to our profession. It could mean reductions in staffing, longer wait times for appointments and the shut down of some clinics. And of course many clinics are still suffering from financial losses related to COVID.

Action: Please participate in the APTA “#FightTheCut Virtually Rally” on September 10. Add your voice to the rally by visiting the APTA Legislative Action Center to send a letter to your members of Congress. This takes all of 5 minutes to do and if we all do it we have a chance of protecting our profession in the years to come!

APTA has created a public template letter to make advocacy easy.

Let’s show the APTA what IL PTs and PTAs can do together.
