Recap of 2020 CESIG Annual Meeting

By: Cori Arquines, PT, MHPE, CLT, CESIG Chair

The Illinois Physical Therapy Association (IPTA) Clinical Education Special Interest Group (CESIG) hosted its second annual meeting on May 6, 2020, via a Zoom meeting. The meeting was productive and resulted in the passing a motion, early recruitment of new CESIG leaders, and supporting dialogue about the needs of our community in the time of COVID-19. During our forum members contributed to the development and passing of a motion to provide up to 2 scholarships per year to clinical educators to attend the Education Leadership Conference (ELC) in the Fall. The application period was open and we have already begun to receive applications and new CESIG members! We are so excited that this opportunity has allowed us to live up to our goals of supporting the development of clinical educators, increasing member participation in the IPTA, and growing our CESIG membership in the state of Illinois. Recipients of this scholarship will have two opportunities to engage as member representatives of the CESIG when they pay it forward through a Keeping You Connected and a #THIRDTHURSDAY program following ELC. We hope that you will consider applying, getting involved, and leaning into your own potential to achieve excellence in clinical education.

Speaking of your potential to develop as a leader in clinical education, help us to achieve a CESIG goal, by running for a position on the CESIG Board during this year’s Chapter elections. We will be seeking nominations for Vice-Chair and Secretary/Treasurer. For more details on these positions please click on the CESIG website link. We are a supportive group and we hope that you will consider joining our team. Please feel free to reach out to a member of the CESIG Board if you would like to learn more about these positions!

Last, but not least, members of our community were able to engage in conversation about the impact of COVID-19 on clinical education. First, the CESIG Board highlighted resources for clinical educators and physical therapy practitioners. Links to these websites will continue to be updated on the CESIG website. Next, we discussed issues that clinician educators have been facing and the recurring theme identified was the need for true partnership behaviors across the continuum of education. Behaviors such as open and timely communication about student placements, consideration of the demands each of us are facing in our own environments, and how these demands impact the wellness of clinical educators. Needs for clinical education and education for students such as telehealth, physical therapy management of patients with COVID-19, and alternative models of clinical education.

Member since 1999

The annual meeting was an opportunity for our community to come together and move our mission of serving as a resource, forum, and voice for members who have a common interest in physical therapy clinical education. The opportunities to engage, share your perspectives, and grow our community doesn't stop there. The CESIG is your partner in all things clinical education.
