MEET A MEMBER: Dena Kontos, SPT, IPTA SSIG President (2020-2021)

The IPTA is proud of members who are working hard towards advancing the physical therapy profession, especially our students.

The Illinois Physical Therapy Association’s Student Special Interest Group (SSIG) is comprised of over 900 SPTs and SPTAs across Illinois. The SSIG provides a platform for Illinois students of physical therapy to communicate, share information and ideas, and participate in the Chapter and the Association.

Third year Northwestern University student, Dena Kontos was elected by her peers to serve as our 2020-2021 SSIG President.

We asked Dena, "What inspired you to pursue a degree to become a physical therapist?”

Kontos: When a family friend’s son was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, I saw how much impact physical therapy can have not only on the life of a patient, but on their entire family. My mom is a physical therapist so she definitely had a hand in inspiring me, but seeing physical therapy alongside a patient’s family was what truly drove me to dedicate my life to it. Physical therapists walk with others through some of their best and worst times. I simply can’t think of a more fulfilling way to spend my life.

Having served as the SSIG Communications Liaison last year, what are you looking forward to most as you transition into your role as SSIG President?

Kontos: I am looking forward to connecting with students from all over the state and helping them get involved! IPTA has so many opportunities for students to use their talents, get involved, and make their voices heard. I am excited to help make those opportunities more visible and meaningful for students.

Dena, the floor is yours.  If you had the attention of all the SPT and SPTA members, what message would you like to convey?

Kontos: Now more than ever, it is important to make sure our profession is inclusive and representative of the patients we serve. Your voice is the most valuable mechanism for change that you have, and it is made stronger when we join our voices together. Membership gives us the potential to create major change in our profession and it is important that we step up.
