May is Membership Matters Month!

Traditionally we have the opportunity to acknowledge our award recipients, scholarship and grant winners, volunteers, and membership anniversaries as part of our REVITALIZE conference.

While the pandemic has drastically changed how we gather - or don’t gather - to celebrate special occasions, it certainly doesn’t change the sentiments behind them.

We have many outstanding physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students as members of our association. You can read about them in the link provided below, and we look forward to a future occasion where we can celebrate our collective accomplishments together.

Of course while these individuals have won our collective awards we are truly blessed with many of our members that have stepped up during this crisis to help in many ways in their respective facilities. Therapists and assistants have stepped forward to prove how important we are in the delivery of care to the public.

I have also been impressed with those delegates that have shown the ability to adapt to the virtual House of Delegates that will be taking place in June.  The work that is required this year as a result of the virtual house is greater than in the past, in this delegates opinion.  The attendance on calls and zoom meetings has been stellar.  I can hardly wait to exchange messages over Slack with my fellow delegates.

What happens after the emergency orders have been lifted? This is a question that I have been asked many times. Colleen and I have been having conversations with our lobbyists to try and determine if we are going to be able to continue to use telehealth for physical therapy in Illinois. As many of you have heard, I have been very concerned about the rules and possible misuse of telehealth in the future to deliver therapy. I believe it is a great adjunct and in times of a crisis like we are currently dealing with it makes great sense. Our patients may very well continue to desire to social distance over the next year and I feel it is important for us to be able to address their needs so We are working with the lobbyists to try and accomplish the continued delivery of home health. I know that many of you have recently heard that private practice therapists can provide telehealth to Medicare recipients. I have reached out to the APTA to try and determine why hospital based therapists would not be able to have the same abilities. Our website and the APTA website have a wealth of information available on treating the COVID-19 patient that includes safeguards for your practice.

I ask that each one of you continue to support the IPTA and APTA through your membership.  This is no time to look past the value that the two associations provide for our field on an ongoing basis as well as during times like we are now experiencing.

Please stay healthy, safe, and strong during these challenging times.
