Happy National Physical Therapy Month!

Get ready to celebrate our profession, for October is recognized as National Physical Therapy Month (NPTM).

Each October, we recognize the impact that physical therapists and physical therapist assistants have on the nation's healthcare community, helping organizations achieve positive patient outcomes, as well as encouraging citizens to live healthy and active lifestyles.

This year's theme is #ChoosePT.  The APTA/IPTA urge you to continue to reach out to the public with the message that physical therapy is a safe alternative to opioids to manage pain and other chronic conditions. #ChoosePT to improve mobility, recover from injury, and prevent future injury and chronic disease. This is also a great opportunity to discuss that the people of Illinois have had Direct Access to Physical Therapy for over a year now!

A few tools to help you spread the word:

  • Download our easy-to-read educational brochures on "Choosing Your Physical Therapist" and role physical therapists have in management of pain. They are FREE for IPTA members to download and may be customized to promote your clinic. Both brochures also available in Spanish!
  • Create a multi-screen digital marketing campaign by using our 30 second consumer-focused direct access commercial.
  • Share resources from APTA's official consumer information website,, which will be visited by more than 4 million Americans this year. The site includes the Find a PT directory, symptoms and conditions guides, health tips, podcasts, and more.
  • Use the hashtag #ChoosePT in your social media posts.
  • Update your Find a PT profile. APTA recently improved this online tool to make it easier for consumers and other health care providers to locate you for the purposes of seeking care. Activate or update your Find a PT profile, and be sure to add a photo and select practice focus areas.
  • Find a chronic pain support group in your area and ask for a meeting with the coordinator. Reach out to local addiction specialists and ensure they know about the benefits of physical therapy as an alternative to opioids for pain management.

Join in by participating in your district’s PT Month event(s) and/or plan your own PT Month event at your clinic/facility/school/hospital. Inform the chapter office ( of the event, so staff can assist in promoting your celebration!  After your event - remember to share pictures via social media and email photos to to be highlighted in an upcoming Keeping You Connected.

Several events are occurring within the Northern District of which you can be engaged and involved.  Each of you can make a difference!

You can be involved by registering as a participant or volunteer at any of these events. (The links below will bring you to the event pages) Consider forming a group or team within your professional and personal networks or simply engage as individual.   At the event wear a shirt that identifies you as part of your profession and start a conversation. For example, #ChoosePT offers a great message; you can order a shirt here.

You may also create your own community event during NPTM.  Links to some great resources are available below:

Reach out to Brad Tracy, Northern District Chair ( if you would like to organize an event in your community.

The Southern District has TWO events planned for NPTM. The first event is in conjunction with SWIC’s Dine and Dash for Education, taking place on Friday, October 18th from 4:00 - 9:00 pm on SWIC’s Belleville Campus, located at 2500 Carlyle Ave. Click here to learn more about this event.

The SWIC PTA faculty will be at a booth analyzing body fat and promoting health/wellness and physical therapy.  Southern District PT, PTAs, and students are encouraged to join us in celebration of PT Month; providing the public with informational pamphlets produced by the Chapter Office.

A second event occurring during PT Month where members of the Southern District will be present promoting the physical therapy profession is the Belleville Main Street Marathon on Saturday, September 28 from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm in downtown Belleville, IL.  HSHS - St Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’fallon, IL is providing a medical tent and personnel at the start, finish, and throughout the course.  For more information on this event, email

On Saturday, October 12th, the West Central District will be hosting a community screening event (general ortho screens, balance/ falls prevention screens, BP/ vitals, etc) as well as mobile blood donation unit at 2201 W. White Oaks in Springfield between 2-4pm.

On Sunday, October 13th, the West Central District will have a table at the Healthy Kids Running Series race event at Centennial Park in Springfield at 4pm to hand out goodies and educational materials that promote physical therapy to the families and young racers.

We can’t wait to help the community better understand physical therapy and how we can help people safely get moving and improve function and performance.

Here’s what you can do to help:

  1. Volunteer!  Email me to let me know your availability and which (or both) events you’d like to be present for.
  2. Talk about the screening event!  Start letting your patients, friends and employers know so that we have plenty of folks attend.  This is a great opportunity to market yourself as a physical therapist but also your business – Plan on wearing your logo wear to the event and bringing your own marketing materials.
  3. Post about it!  We are seeking members to post the events on social media platforms as well!  Share, tweet, etc…
