Updates from Your Federal Affairs Liaison

August is here and that means our U.S. Senators and Representatives are on August Recess and back in district. This is a great opportunity to meet with your U.S. Representative and help them understand the value we provide to our patients.

Please look out for Town Hall Meetings in your area to attend. Or even better yet, invite your Representative to visit your workplace. They like to get out and meet constituents. I will be hosting Rep. Rodney Davis at my clinic and it was easy to set up by calling his district office.

The bills that are a focus for us right now include legislation to help ease the burden of student debt (National Health Services Corp S970/HR2802 and Workforce Diversity HB2781) and legislation to reduce administrative burdens on therapists so we can focus more time on patient care. This bill is titled ‘Improving Seniors’ Timely Access to Care Act of 2019’ (HR3107).

CMS is pushing forward with Proposed 2020 Home Health Rule. One change includes allowing PTAs to provide maintenance therapy. On August 5th, the APTA joined with the American Occupational Therapy Association, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and CMS for a webinar for APTA members on how therapy providers can best navigate the new Medicare Patient-Driven Groupings Model planned to go into effect January 1, 2020. A recording of this webinar will be posted on APTA website when its available.
