Exploring New Areas of Physical Therapy—A First Year DPT Student's Perspective

Burnt Out

By: Andrea Hart, SPT, Northwestern University

Going to the APTA Combined Sections Meeting, I had no idea what to expect. I didn’t know what sessions would entail or what my responsibilities would be as an attendee. I did know spending 3 days surrounded by thousands of individuals who are passionate about the same things I am, learning from those that are just as passionate sounded like an amazing experience!

Going to Washington DC there was one specific place that I wanted to go: Arlington National Cemetery. I am passionate about service members since my dad is a Veteran, and I have family currently in the service. At the cemetery I was talking with two women about the history in DC and how special of a place it was where we were standing. Conversation progressed and it soon turned to Physical Therapy. I could see how invested they were in their profession as they were excited for this conference, and it really hit me how amazing Physical Therapy is. This got me excited and I hadn’t even been to the conference.

At the conference I planned my sessions to learn new information in settings that I was not familiar or comfortable with. By the second day, I found myself drawn to the same section of therapy. I looked back at my transcript and half of my sessions were related to tactical athletes! (with one outlier being canine/equine therapy! Who knew this was a thing?). CSM was amazing for me, because I found a setting that I am passionate about and it gave me time to network with individuals in this field that are able to answer specific questions I had and still have. I recommend this conference to anyone wanting to see how many sections of physical therapy there are because there are so many that you may have never consider.

Hi Andrea! It is wonderful to hear of your positive and inspiring experience at CSM! As a student, the road is not always visible for future mentoring, job opportunities or the variety of settings encompassed in the PT profession. CSM is a great conference to engage with other colleagues across the nation who share your passion! Best wishes for your continued success!
