School Spotlight: Midwestern DPT Students Take Training to the Next Level at Evaluation Olympics

By: Megan DeKam, SPT ‘19, & Karlie Bless, SPT ‘20, Midwestern University

Midwestern University in Downers Grove held their second annual Evaluation Olympics at the beginning of September, bringing students together to review skills in a unique way. Second and third year students created teams and began the competition with a variety of manual tasks which varied from neurological to orthopedic skills. Teams would rotate to different stations, each manned by a different professor. One team member would draw a skill from a pile, perform the skill on a first-year student volunteer, and get evaluated on how accurately they completed the task. The second half of the competition consists of several rounds of trivia, including history of physical therapy, neurology, professor knowledge, and more!

The Evaluation Olympics is a relaxed atmosphere where teams help one another can to correctly perform skills. It was a great opportunity to interact with faculty in a different setting. The atmosphere is competitive and energetic but not stressful since it is team based. The Evaluation Olympics also invites first year students to be patients, giving them an opportunity to get to know the second and third years better and despite the stressors of PT school, it is fun! BlissThe Evaluation Olympics is an energetic way to review physical therapy skills and bring all three classes together!

The Evaluation Olympics is a also great way to review  skills for upcoming clinicals! Students identify areas needing improvement, receive feedback on their skills, and become more comfortable performing skills in front of others. The event is casual, unlike a skill check. Participants can discuss with each other, make jokes, and get help when needed. The event is a fun review with teams competing for awards such as best team name and team spirit.

What a great, successful event for networking, team development and building confidence in skill set! This could be a model for other schools to follow.
