Incoming Ethics Committee Chair

The IPTA is proud of members who are working hard towards advancing the physical therapy profession.

IPTA’s Ethics Committee is comprised of three appointed members who help to promote the ethical practice of physical therapy by ensuring that education, information and resources relating to ethics and ethical practice are available to our members.

Having been a member of the Ethics committee since 2017, Sarah Keller, PT, DPT, NCS looks forward to her transition to committee chair beginning January 1, 2019.

In getting to know Sarah a little better, we asked how do you think your background has prepared you for serving on the Ethics Committee?

Keller: "The first is that I enjoy the decision-making process around medical and PT ethics. I value the rational reflection and looking at a situation from all perspectives prior to making a decision. Another part of my background is a strong sense of values and professional ethics instilled in me from an early age and further fostered in my multiple work environments. I have had countless professional mentors that set an example but also encouraged me to trust my ethical compass. A final piece is my understanding and comfort with the various policies, codes, acts, and statements that affect our profession in my role as an educator."

Sarah, the phrase ‘Ethical Dilemma’: where do you think it applies most in current physical therapy practice?

Keller: "I think as a profession we need to continue to be autonomous decision makers with the needs of our patients in mind. We face many competing needs/values/stakeholders as a profession and we need to make sure that we are providing patient centered, skilled, medically necessary, and value-based care for our patients. As a profession we need to hold each other accountable to that standard."

If you had the attention of all members, what message would you like to convey?

Keller: "My biggest message is remember that we are a membership organization and the members are the most important part. Those that are elected, work to represent you. If you have any interest in participating more, reach out, because there are so many ways to be involved in the organization."
