Direct access allows Illinois consumers to seek physical therapy WITHOUT a referral. How will they find you?

Once the Direct Access bill is signed and consumers are no longer solely dependent on provider referrals, they will be searching and evaluating physical therapy providers based on their own criteria. Convenience of location, area of specialty, treatment setting, accepted insurance plans and other practice details could be deciding factors in who they choose. How do you get your practice information out there for them to find?

One way is through APTA’s Find a PT directory. Using Find a PT, prospective patients can search the national database of APTA PT members to identify the provider that best meets their needs.

But, you need to activate and complete your profile to be found!

Activating or Editing Your Find a PT Profile
All APTA PT members willing to be contacted by patients and clients seeking care/advice are eligible to be listed.

1. Log into the APTA website at

2. Select Find a PT Profile in the right column containing your membership information.

3. Make sure you select Yes to Activate Find a PT Listing.

4. Add/update your profile information. Include your professional experience, specialist certification, treatment philosophy and any other pertinent details of your practice (including payment options) to increase your chance of being contacted. You can also add a photo!

5. *Very important*, at the bottom, you MUST have a practice location listed for your profile to appear in the search results. Select Create a New Location from the dropdown menu and select the address listed on your APTA member record or add a new address. Click Save.

Your listing will be associated with your city, zip code, and practice name in the directory. Changes to your profile can take up to 24 hours to display. If you have any problems please contact APTA’s Membership Department at 1-800-999-2782, option #1.

Please remember that your "Find a PT" profile information is intended for use by consumers seeking care and thus is publicly accessible. Although APTA takes measures to attempt to prohibit data phishing and warns against solicitations, APTA cannot entirely prevent your information from being accessed and possibly misused.

COMING SOON: Geolocation Technology!

With the adaption of geolocation technology into the website, consumers accessing the site from their mobile device (who have location tracking on) will be able to view state-specific content based on their location. For Illinois, this means the information about direct access will be made upfront and accessible, ensuring consumers are aware they can search for PT treatment options independent of physician referral and encouraging them to Find a PT.
