50th Anniversary of Special Olympics

Athletes from around the world traveled to Chicago last month for the 2018 Special Olympics, marking their 50th anniversary of the first games that were held at Soldier Field in 1968 and have since grown to involve 4.5 million athletes from 170 countries.

FUNfitness is a fitness screening developed for the Special Olympics by APTA.   It provides an opportunity for physical therapists, physical therapist assistants and students to participate in the Special Olympics by assessing all components of fitness, educating athletes, families and coaches about the importance of fitness, and providing a hands-on opportunity to learn about the role of the physical therapist in fitness.  this year, over 40 PTs, PTAs, and students participated.

“It was a great experience and we all learned a great deal about these wonderful athletes” says IPTA member Gail Huber, PT, PhD, the Illinois State Director of FUNfitness.
