Lobby Day Recap

On Wednesday, February 7th, IPTA members along with non-members congregated in the rotunda of Illinois State Capitol building for a Lobby Day. Our purpose was to influence and gather support for HB 4643, IPTA’s Direct Access legislation.

This legislation essentially amends the Illinois Physical Therapy Practice Act by removing language requiring a diagnosis to be substantiated by a physician, dentist, advanced practice registered nurse, physician assistant, or podiatric physician.

PT professionals and students visited offices of their elected officials to garner co-sponsors of HB 4643 and educate them on physical therapist’s role in improving and restoring mobility in patients’ lives – their constituents.

Advocates utilized our #ChoosePT-first campaign materials to raise awareness to policymakers about physical therapy as a safe and effective alternative to opioids for long-term treatment of pain.

While our Lobby Day was incredibly successful - our efforts can not stop here. We need all members to contact their legislators to support our direct access bill (HB 4643).

These local grassroot efforts are just one of the many ways YOU can help gain direct access in Illinois.

The IPTA would like to thank all who participated in our Lobby Day.

Piggybacking off APTA’s #ChoosePT campaign, we are promoting physical therapy FIRST as a safe, non-addictive alternative for managing pain over addictive opioids.

The IPTA has developed a convenient, easy-to-read brochure that will capture the attention of our elected officials and help educate them on the 5 things they can do to help fight Illinois' opioid epidemic.

Essentially, we are asking legislative to help us with the following:

  1. Remove restrictions in the Illinois Physical Therapy Act that impede access to a physical therapist.
  2. Provide for fair physical co-pays under insurance.
  3. Allow physical therapists to perform to the full extent of their education and training.
  4. Protect patient choice of their physical therapist.
  5. Protect the truth in advertising by enforcing laws that protect physical therapy terms.

This brochure is FREE for IPTA members to download and can even be customized to include your contact information or name of your clinic/practice.
