MEET A MEMBER(s): Outgoing and Incoming IPTA Speaker of the Assembly

The IPTA is proud of our fascinating and influential members who are working hard towards advancing the physical therapy profession.

Among the shared authority of governance within the IPTA is the Chapter’s Board of Directors (BOD). Members of the Board of Directors are elected officials who oversee the association’s well-being.

Jeannette Elliott, PT has served on IPTA’s Board of Directors as your Speaker of the Assembly for the past two years.

Amongst the many responsibilities our BOD members have, the role of Speaker of The Assembly includes the duties of conducting business at our Annual Assembly of Representatives.

Having presided over the Assembly of Representatives for the past two years, we asked Jeannette…. “what has your experience as the Assembly Speaker taught you?”

Elliott: When I was a new grad practicing in Ohio, I attended the OPTA's Assembly out of curiosity and believing that as a member I should exercise my right to vote.  Besides being involved in Student Council in high school, it was my first real exposure to participating in organizational governance and I was hooked.  Our Assembly gives members the opportunity to listen, debate, and vote on important issues related to the IPTA and the profession.  Even issues that are important to only one or a few members can be heard and I think that's cool!  As the Speaker, helping members bring their ideas forward and ensuring the minority have a chance to be heard reinforced my belief that as a member you have rights, and exercising those rights to the fullest makes for a stronger membership and profession.

On January 1st, 2018, Jeannette will be passing on the leadership baton to incoming 2018-2019 Speaker of the Assembly, Tina Jonas, PT.

Tina has already begun work, as the 2018 Assembly will be here before you know it. Next year’s Assembly will be held on Saturday, April 14th in conjunction with IPTA’s 2018 REVITALIZE Conference.

In getting to know Tina a little more, we asked “what are your hopes for the 2018 Assembly?

Jonas: As the Speaker-elect, I am excited to start the planning for the 2018 Assembly of Representatives with the current Speaker, Jeannette Elliot. One of my favorite parts of this component of the IPTA’s governance is the personal interactions with other IPTA members. This format is one of the few opportunities to connect face-to-face with members from across the state and make decisions and determine directions to grow as a profession. In a time where technology seems to limit conversation, these gatherings offer the opportunity to bring issues, old and new, to the whole and have lively conversations, debate and resultant action. Movement forward in our profession is possible due to the collaboration between individual members, the Assembly, our BOD, and committees.

Why do you believe this type of assembly structure is valuable for professional associations?

Jonas: The part of these annual meetings that I particularly enjoy is the process of parliamentary procedure.  These rules and customs help the IPTA be efficient in our business, while respecting the views of each individual member. Although the conversations can get heated, during each session, each member can voice opinions and choose to vote on the individual issues at hand – knowing that the organization will accept their viewpoints as part of this dialogue. Our passion in these meetings is palpable, and I feel energized as a physical therapist for weeks following the event.

Jeannette & Tina, If you had the attention of all the Members, what message would you like to convey?

Elliott: Every time I've served in a leadership position in IPTA I've said, "this is the best experience!"  This is so true for serving as the Speaker of the Assembly.  Thank you representatives for your graciousness and willingness to serve.  Thank you Board of Directors for your camaraderie and collegiality.  Thank you IPTA staff for making it all happen so smoothly, with poise and dedication.  Serving as the Speaker of the Assembly by far has been the best experience yet!

Jonas: My hope for our future of physical therapy in Illinois, is that our members will continue to be actively involved in the Assembly and join in this conversation. I hope to hear from all of the membership as to new ideas to continue the exchange throughout the year and look forward to meeting all at the 2018 Assembly.
