Join us for this month's Spotlight on Research Virtual Learning course as Anthony Rapplean, PT presents his research on "Health Literacy 101: Overview of Recommended Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Stress Management Guidelines to Combat Chronic Disease."

According to the Centers for Disease Control website, as of 2012, about half of all adults had one or more chronic health conditions. One quarter of adults had 2 or more chronic health conditions.  Upwards of 80% of the nation’s. 2.7 trillion healthcare expenditures are for people with chronic conditions.  Additionally, according to the National Association of Adult Library, only 12% of adults have proficient health literacy.  Essentially, 9 out of 10 adults have low health literacy, which has been linked to poor health outcomes.  As physical therapists and physical therapy assistants, we all to often see the detrimental effects of chronic illness and we are well positioned to evaluate and educate our patients to make better lifestyle choices.  This webinar will educate participants in the prevalence of chronic disease and the burden it places on the nation’s healthcare system as well as the economy.  Participants will then learn the most up to date, evidenced based guidelines for physical activity, nutrition, and stress management that they can use to promote health literacy to their patients.

Upon completion of this virtual learning webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand that chronic diseases are among the most common, costly, and preventable of all health problems.
  2. Describe the recommended minimal physical activity guidelines for adults.
  3. Describe the recommended dietary guidelines for adults.
  4. Describe evidenced based stress management strategies.
