Acute Care 101 (FREE) 13 CE Hours

Course Description: This self-paced course is an introduction to acute care practice from vital sign interpretation and chart review to exercise prescription for patients recovering from critical illness. Students will focus on applying physiological principles unique to acutely ill populations in developing an exercise program that facilitates healing and reduces hospital readmission. There will be two synchronous sessions associated with this course.

Join us online, July 6 - August 1, for this free, self-paced course developed in partnership with leaders from the APTA Academy of Acute Care Physical Therapy.

Acute Care 101:

  • Provides information for outpatient PTs being called into the inpatient setting and outpatient PTs who are now seeing post-COVID patients in the outpatient setting
  • Includes a comprehensive review of acute care considerations, lab values, precautions, ICU acquired weakness, and clinical decision making for patients who have endured a serious illness with hospitalization
  • Includes exercise prescription and post-acute rehab applicable to the outpatient setting
  • Features an exciting module on PTs in the E.D.

Course Objectives:

Course participants upon completion will be able to:

  • Interpret exercise response to structure an exercise program to optimize patient outcomes
  • Apply clinical reasoning skills related to chart review and line management in a patient case scenario
  • Relate the examination, evaluation and interventions pertinent to individuals with Post Intensive Care Syndrome
  • Differentiate inpatients who require rehab versus mobility in patient cases
  • Identify roles that PT can also serve in the ED to limit admissions
  • Determine discharge disposition and appropriate discharge exercise prescription
