Therapeutic Management of Patients with Pulmonary Disease

Course Description: This two-day course will provide a comprehensive overview of the therapeutic management of patients with obstructive and/or restrictive pulmonary diseases that are especially applicable to physical and occupational therapists. This course will review normal pulmonary anatomy and physiology as well as pulmonary pathophysiology. Instruction will focus on management of patients with chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, bronchiectasis, atelectasis, pneumonia, pulmonary fibrosis, pneumothorax and respiratory failure. The concepts and principles included in this course will enhance the participant’s knowledge and clinical skills through lecture, case discussions, and demonstration/practice. Emphasis will be placed on practical methods for examination, clinical decision making, and effective treatment strategies including exercise prescription. Evidence-based information a variety of therapeutic approaches will be discussed that will provide a foundation from which appropriate decisions can be made regarding patient needs. This course is designed for participants with a basic to intermediate level of experience.

Course Objectives:

Course participants upon completion will be able to:

  • Discuss normal pulmonary anatomy and physiology and the changes that occur with normal aging as well as changes that occur due to the pathologies that are included in the course.
  • Discuss the effect of body position on ventilation and perfusion.
  • Recognize and differentiate signs and symptoms of obstructive and restrictive diseases.
  • Discuss common pulmonary surgical interventions and their post-op therapeutic management.
  • Perform a pulmonary examination and formulate an appropriate intervention and plan of care based on the results of the examination.
  • Identify abnormal breath sounds and adventitious sounds and their implication in the management of patients with pulmonary disease.
  • Perform pulmonary interventions including airway clearance techniques, assisted cough techniques, breathing strategies and relaxation positions.
  • Discuss the effects of the most commonly used medications used in the management of pulmonary disease and their possible impact on physical and occupational therapy interventions.
  • Discuss the principles of pulmonary rehabilitation and formulate an appropriate exercise prescription for a patient with pulmonary disease.
  • Assess the patient’s response to interventions and modify the program as needed.
