Performing Artist Comprehensive Management

Course Description: This course will cover current best evidence in the physical therapy management of the performing artist. Lecture material will cover current best practice on evaluation and functional screening, summarize the most prevalent injuries/conditions, and discuss application of manual therapy and therapeutic exercise strategies for the dance population. Lab sessions will emphasize manual therapy interventions, re-education of common movement patterns, and dance specific therapeutic exercise strategies.

Course Objectives:

Course participants upon completion will be able to:

  • Perform a thorough evaluation using clinical practice guidelines and current best evidence to determine physical exam data collection
  • Demonstrate proficiency in performing a standardized, dance specific screen to objectively evaluate movement patterns associated with injury risk in dancers.
  • Understand the psychosocial factors that may predispose a dancer to injury and/or impair recovery from injury.
  • Enhance knowledge of blending classic dance training philosophy and modern evidence based therapeutic exercise models to optimize performance and prevention of injury.
  • Demonstrate an excellent understanding of current best evidence in regards to manual therapy, thrust and non-thrust joint mobilization techniques, in the treatment of common dance injuries.
  • Demonstrate proper technique with mobilization and thrust manipulation to the lower quarter and lumbar spine.
  • Demonstrate proper technique with all dance specific exercises and their home exercise counter parts.
  • Understand basic programming principles to enhance performance and avoid training error that may result in preventable injury.
