Best Practices for Successful Rehab of an Amputee

Course Description: This course will introduce you to immediate postoperative care, advancements in technology, the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, and the benefits of patient advocates. At the conclusion of the course, participants will have a thorough understanding of the multidisciplinary approach to amputee rehabilitation including postoperative care, componentry selection of technology, and ways in which a peer mentor can help to improve outcomes.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • appraise and practice appropriate prosthetic management of bilateral transfemoral amputees and management of congenital limb deficiencies;
  • appraise and practice appropriate socket fit and assessment techniques that will have the greatest benefit for the prosthetic patient;
  • identify and evaluate common prosthetic gait anomalies then select appropriate treatments and solutions for their prosthetic patients;
  • identify their own patient’s ability or potential for ambulation with variable cadence;
  • compare and analyze his/her own patient’s physical limitation as well as their potential abilities; and
  • articulate treatment goals based on the testimony of the course speaker.
