"Treatment of Chronic Low Back Pain and Sacroiliac Joint Pain Utilizing Manual Therapy and a Movement Impairment Syndrome Approach"

Earn 1 FREE hour of CE!

Join us for this month's Spotlight on Research Virtual Learning course as Andrew C. Thomas, PT, DPT, CSCS, CEEAA, COMT, FAAOMPT  presents his research on "Treatment of Chronic Low Back Pain and Sacroiliac Joint Pain Utilizing Manual Therapy and a Movement Impairment Syndrome Approach."

Current physical therapy treatment paradigms are well supported for acute low back pain but are not as supported for chronic low back pain. A possible explanation for this is the heterogeneity of the patients that present with chronic low back pain and their precipitating factors, including sacroiliac joint dysfunction. This session will review current literature regarding the anatomy, biomechanics, and treatment of chronic low back pain with sacroiliac joint dysfunction. It will also briefly cover a couple common movement pattern impairments that can precede low back pain and sacroiliac joint dysfunction. Lastly, it will end with a clinical case-based discussion of a case study combining a manual therapy and movement pattern impairment approach.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Appraise current research surrounding the treatment of the sacroiliac joint and how it pertains to treatment of low back pain
  • Differentiate between manual treatment strategies for low back pain and sacroiliac joint dysfunction
  • Compare different exercise treatment strategies for low back pain and sacroiliac joint dysfunction
  • Contrast the differences between different common movement impairment syndromes of the lumbar spine
  • Apply knowledge gained from a case-based discussion regarding a patient with chronic low back pain and sacroiliac joint dysfunction to their current practice
