My NSC Experience

By: Rima Lintaks, SPT, Midwestern University

My Lyft driver Saturday night after the Neuro section mixer at the 2017 National Student Conclave (NSC) in Portland, OR asked me, "What is one thing you learned at your conference this weekend?" I thought about that question for a bit. I hadn't really learned new clinical skills, I hadn't learned new personal skills.  I was stumped. It wasn't until later that night, as I was packing for my flight home, that I realized what I learned wasn't a tangible piece of information, but a realization of a feeling. The feeling, that I was accepted in the #PTFam community. The feeling that this family would stand by me if I'm in trouble. The outpouring of love when other students found out I was the only person from my program at this and previous conferences. The mutual respect, that we're all in this together (cue High School Musical soundtrack in my head). The feeling that I was comfortable enough within this incredible community to stand up at the General Membership Meeting, and express my thanks to everyone there for making me feel this way (I'm an emotional person, and I almost cried…).

Some of my favorite experiences:

    • Meeting up with my IPTA SSIG Board members before our flight
    • *Cue awkward eye contact* "Have we met before?" "No, but I think I follow you on twitter!" *Cue hug*
    • (Finding my friends after I found out they were voted into the Student Assembly Board of Directors) "You made it! I'm so proud of you!" *Cue teary eyes and shaky voices*
    • Re-introducing myself to Dr. Sharon Dunn, the APTA President

It's crazy to think, that within the past year, so many opportunities have opened because I attended NSC in Miami. I ran for and was accepted to, the 2017 NSC Project Committee to help plan this conference. I became the 2017-2018 IPTA Student SIG Vice President, and attended this NSC with 2 others also on the SSIG. I ran (although didn't make the slate) for the APTA Student Assembly Board of Directors. I worked with the APTA to present 3 member value talks to the PT classes within my program. I am a presence on Twitter - so much so, that when I re-introduced myself to Dr. Dunn, she said "Oh, yes, from Twitter!". I have been thriving in PT school, not merely surviving.

Last year, I learned all about this #PTFam, but I wasn't able to put my exact feelings into words. This year, I have found so many things to be thankful for, and am able to put my thoughts down coherently. I'm thankful for my NSC Project Committee, with whom I helped plan an incredible conference. I'm thankful for my roommates from East Tennessee State University, who accepted me and my 10pm bedtime. But most of all, I'm thankful for friends who have become family.
