Get to Know Your (2017-2018) SSIG Leadership!

SSIG PRESIDENT: Samantha Caravette, SPT, University of Illinois at ChicagoWhat do you know a lot about? I’d like to think I know a little bit about a lot of things! I believe one of my strengths is my undying curiosity and pursuit of knowledge. Whether it’s about movies, sports, architecture, or random historical moments, I’ve probably done a little research on it. Oh, and Alexander Hamilton. I have memorized and am forever obsessed with the Hamilton soundtrack.

What do you want to know more about? I would love to know more about languages. During my summer clinical, I got to use my limited Spanish and found myself picking up bits of Polish and Greek as well. Many of the therapists I worked with had at least some use of a second language that I felt really helped them connect with their patients.

Favorite form of exercise: My favorite form of exercise is one that keeps me interested! I change my workout routine about every three months and cycle between long distance running, strength training, HIIT, or any combination of those. However, one of my favorite things to train for and participate in are distance races. I most recently ran the BIG10 10K in July (go Illini!) and will be running the Hot Chocolate 15K in October.

Most looking forward to this school year: I am very excited for all the new things I will be learning in my final two clinicals! Additionally, I’m hoping to attend CSM in New Orleans next year, which will be my first national PT event. Finally, I can’t wait to see my PT friends again in November and see how much we’ve all grown as clinicians over the past few months.

SSIG VICE PRESIDENT: Rima Lintakas, SPT, Midwestern UniversityWhat do you know a lot about? I know a little too much about the tv shows, Greys Anatomy and NCIS. They're my guilty pleasures when I need a break from school!

What do you want to know more about? I want to know more about pediatric physical therapy in the acute/inpatient setting. Good thing I have a clinical in pediatrics in the Spring!

Favorite form of exercise: I love to dance - especially Lithuanian Folk Dancing and tap dancing.

Most looking forward to this school year: I'm most looking forward to finally finishing up didactic coursework and getting started on my final two clinicals of PT school.

SSIG SECRETARY TREASURER: Murtaza Aziz, SPT, Rosalind Franklin UniversityWhat do you know a lot about? Over my past two clinical rotations, I’ve had some good experiences in outpatient orthopedic clinics and feel like I’ve gotten to learn a lot from my clinical instructors about manual therapy. On the non-PT side of things, I’ve gone down the rabbit hole of specialty coffee and probably know more about coffee roasting and brewing than I probably should.

What do you want to know more about? I’m certainly interested in learning more about vestibular and neuro PT as well as continuing to develop more of my orthopedic skills.

Favorite form of exercise: I definitely enjoy exercising in all its forms but if I had to choose one I would probably say hiking. There’s something about being outdoors and surrounded by nature that’s very appealing to me. Plus, you can’t beat the feeling of appreciating some breathtaking views during a hike while your heart is racing.

Most looking forward to this school year: I’m certainly excited to be in the clinic for most of the following year and furthering my clinical schools. My next rotation will be in a sub-acute/rehab setting at the Jesse Brown VA Center.

SSIG SPECIAL EVENTS COORDINATOR: Garrett Stroup, SPT, Governors State UniversityWhat do you know a lot about?  I enjoy sport specific rehabilitation and training program development using the tools I have received through personal experiences and Governors State’s program. After my clinical, I found success through the development of therapeutic exercise programs for the patients that I met.

What do you want to know more about? During this upcoming semester, I will be enrolled in courses which are focused on special tests to improve my understanding and to better adapt the therapy progression for the patient.

Favorite form of exercise: Rock climbing, running, and yoga.

Most looking forward to this school year: I am extremely excited to attend the National Student Conclave (NSC) this upcoming October with my colleagues. Events, such as NSC, CSM, etc., seem to be incredible opportunities to meet motivated students and established professionals.

SSIG SPTA DIRECTOR: Jason Magafas, SPTA, Fox CollegeWhat do you know a lot about? Emergency situations from being a paramedic.

What do you want to know more about? Diathermy is really interesting to me, as well as thoracic spine rehab.

Favorite form of exercise: Swimming

Most looking forward to this school year: I am about to go out to clinicals so that should be fun and midly scary too!

SSIG COMMUNICATIONS LIAISON: Megan Lamphere, SPT, Northwestern UniversityWhat do you know a lot about?  I know quite a lot about gymnastics. I was a gymnast from the ages of 3-22. I can tell you all about how to clean chalk off your clothes and be sure your hair stays in a ponytail after 4 hours of flipping and a whole lot more.

What do you want to know more about? I’ve always wanted to learn how to ballroom dance and hope one day I can take lessons. I love watching Dancing with the Stars and would like to one day dance the Tango with Derek Hough.

Favorite form of exercise: Since retiring from gymnastics, I’ve tried to dabble in as many different forms of exercise as I can. The ones that seem to stick out to me right now are yoga, kettle bell workouts and going for bike rides.

Most looking forward to this school year: I am looking forward to diving deeper into the areas of PT that interest me and finding my niche to guide me in my career. And if that doesn’t happen, I’m looking forward to keeping an open mind and going wherever life takes me.

SSIG TRANSITION TO NEW PROFESSIONALS CHAIR: Jeremy Graddick, SPTA, Fox CollegeWhat do you know a lot about? Lets see now... food, how to function on o sleep, and how to use the power of positive thinking...oh yea and some other things related to physical therapy i guess...lol

What do you want to know more about? Life, and everything research can offer me to heal and return to function everyone income in contact with

Favorite form of exercise: Balance, because without it everything else falls through(pun intended)

Most looking forward to this school year: Graduating and making money!!! I mean healing people, yup definitely all about healing the people...no seriously its all about the patient!!!

Go ahead - ask them a question!
