#THIRDTHURSDAY: Cross-cultural Realities in Clinical Practice: A sub-acute care perspective


We invite you to join us from 5:30 - 8 pm on Thursday, March 15th  as Paul A. McKoy, PT, MS, GCS shares his knowledge and expertise on "Cross-cultural Realities in Clinical Practice: A sub-acute care perspective ".

As clinicians in Illinois, we work with and for many people whose cultural backgrounds are different from our own. This presentation will address the broad issue of cross-culture interaction as it relates to clinical practice from a subacute care perspective. Discussed will be clinician awareness to the cultural heritage of various individuals encountered, the source and effects of societal influences on personal bias toward certain cultures, use of music as a bridging-builder during treatment interventions to specific to patient's culture and an appreciation for the common shared humanity we experience.


What to expect: 

Upon completion of the program, participants will:

  • Recognize the current cultural diverse demographic in Illinois and it's impact on clinical and organizational settings.
  • Understand how societal influences may create a personal bias impacting cross-cultural interactions.
  • Perceive, accommodate and adapt to the cultural norms of your patients.
  • Identify and utilize patient centered music as a cross-cultural bridge-building opportunity in the clinical setting for a growing Muslim demographic in our clinical settings.
  • Appreciate the common humanity we share, regardless of cultural background.



About the Speaker

Dr. Paul McKoy, PT, MS, GCS has more than 25 years of clinical practice and is currently practicing with Marianjoy of Northwestern Medicine, in subacute care at Palos Heights, IL.  He obtained his Geriatric Clinical Specialty in 1999 and has given professional presentations at  the State of Illinois - Department on Aging sponsored Conferences.  He has practiced in across various clinical settings with most being in subacute care.  He has a lifetime of interacting with people of diverse cultural backgrounds, has worked with many patient's and colleagues of various nationalities and religious traditions. He has attended two World Physical Therapy Congresses and seeks to share the richness of multiculturalism in the clinical setting with both patients and colleagues alike.
