"Powering up Chronic Stroke Rehabilitation: Investigation into Overground Exoskeleton Training."

Earn 1 FREE hour of CE!

Join us for this month's Spotlight on Research Virtual Learning course as Kristen Hohl, PT, DPT, NCS presents her research on "Powering up Chronic Stroke Rehabilitation: Investigation into Overground Exoskeleton Training."

This research investigates the utilization of a robotic exoskeleton, Ekso, as a gait training intervention for individuals in the chronic phase following stroke compared to a gait-focused traditional rehab. Twelve subjects in each group received a total of 26 one-hour sessions. Outcomes of interest are objective measures of mobility, self-report quality of life measures and level of independence. Findings from this research will direct future investigations into how exoskeletons can be integrated into clinical care as an effective intervention tool.

Upon completion of this virtual learning webinar, participates will be able to:

  • Understand current literature available for exoskeletons in the stroke population
  • Verbalize the study design and the objectives .
  • Summarize training and progression strategies.
  • Summarize primary outcomes from this study.
  • Understand future research directions for exoskeletons in translating them to effective clinical practice (advantages and limitations).

ABOUT THE RESEARCHER:

Kristen Hohl, PT, DPT, NCS currently splits her time working at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab as an outpatient physical therapist focusing on treating individuals with neurologic diagnoses and working as a research therapist in Dr. Arun Jayaraman’s Max Nader Center for Rehabilitation Technologies and Outcomes Research. Kristen leads the study entitled, Mobility training using exoskeletons for functional recovery after stroke, which utilizes the Ekso robotic exoskeleton in an intensive gait training study for individuals following a severe stroke.

Though early in her career, Kristen has established herself as an emerging leader in the field. She graduated in 2012 with her doctorate in physical therapy and has already presented on outcomes and robotic technology at numerous conferences locally and nationally. She is a board certified neurologic clinical specialist. She is also the clinical therapist in charge of the exoskeleton clinic which provides screening, training and education for individuals pursuing home mobility using available exoskeletons.

You are encouraged to send questions and comments prior to the event using the IPTA Research Question Box and the IPTA Research Forum. Please note that you must be logged into the site as an IPTA member to submit your questions.
