Join us for this month's Spotlight on Research Virtual Learning course as Janey Prodoehl, PT, PhD presents her research on "Diagnostic accuracy of clinical examination and patient satisfaction and outcomes following individualized physical therapy treatment in patients with temporomandibular joint disorder."

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) represents a constellation of signs and symptoms involving the temporomandibular joints and/or muscles of mastication. It has been estimated that up to 12% of the general population have experienced signs and symptoms of TMD and treatment for TMD has become a costly venture for both patients and third party payers. Research investigating the efficacy of treatment has been hampered by a tendency to assume that all patients with TMD have the same underlying diagnosis. Various diagnostic classifications have been developed to identify specific sub-types of TMD. A clear understanding of the diagnostic criteria, diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility of an examination by physical therapists will help to ensure that patients are appropriately classified to inform treatment planning. Additionally, a clear understanding of expected outcomes and patient satisfaction from physical therapy treatment for patients with TMD utilizing an individualized plan of care mirroring best practice is needed. This webinar will present findings from two recent studies which examined diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes in a large cohort of patients with one specific sub-type of TMD. Additionally, diagnostic criteria for other sub-types will be reviewed.

Upon completion of this virtual learning webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe diagnostic criteria for different sub-types of TMD
  • Identify essential elements of a physical therapy examination of a patient with TMD
  • Discuss the diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility of an examination by physical therapists
  • Describe expected patient outcomes and satisfaction following physical therapy treatment for patients with TMD

Janey Prodoehl, PT, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Physical Therapy Program at Midwestern University. Dr. Prodoehl completed her entry level physical therapy degree in Leeds, England, an advanced Master of Science degree in physical therapy at Rosalind Franklin University, and doctoral and post-doctoral studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has over 25 years of experience as a physical therapist primarily in out-patient orthopedic settings. Her doctoral studies examined motor control in dystonia, and her post-doctoral work examined functional and structural neuroimaging in patients with movement disorders. Her clinical practice and research interest is centered around the evaluation and treatment of patients with orofacial pain and headache.

Dr. Prodoehl has authored numerous publications from her doctoral and post-doctoral work in top tier journals. Her research focus is to ask questions related to motor control that will lead to an improved understanding of musculoskeletal movement dysfunction and how to treat it.

You are encouraged to send questions and comments prior to the event using the IPTA Research Question Box and the IPTA Research Forum. Please note that you must be logged into the site as an IPTA member to submit your questions.

Upon completion of the webinar, attendees will also be eligible to earn up to 1 FREE CE by filling out a short evaluation form. You MUST RSVP, prior to the date of webinar, in order to receive the email that is sent out the morning of the webinar with the evaluation link.
