The key to effective lobbying is involvement of the members of an organization.  This is called “grassroots”.  In other words, lobbying that involves the individual member (from the ground up), rather than lobbying only done by a paid lobbyist and the organization’s leadership.

While the IPTA communicates its ideas and positions to legislators in Illinois, the Association itself is not a constituent of any politician or lawmaker, so our opinion on matters, while valued, does not result in a vote for a candidate at election time.  Each of our members, however, is a voter, and voter’s opinions do count at election time.

To have an impact on legislation that affects health care, physical therapy education and physical therapy practice, PTs and PTAs MUST communicate with their Senators and Representatives for them to fully understand your concerns.  Factual information should be provided about issues that affect IPTA members and their families.  Legislators want your opinions, especially on subjects that directly affect you and your profession.  They need your insights and real-life experiences to address issues that affect you.  Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist assistants are the EXPERTS on issues related to physical therapy practice.

IPTA has materials available for you to serve as an effective grassroots lobbyist.  Just contact the Chapter office at ipta@ipta.org to receive the materials.
