Each Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association is responsible for establishing and maintaining an ethics committee. APTA Bylaws obligate each Chapter to investigate any complaints of violations of ethical principles or standards made against any member in its jurisdiction.


Report to: The IPTA President on matters relating to specific ethics complaints. Written reports should be submitted annually to the Assembly of Representatives, and as requested to the Board of Directors.

Committee Composition &Term: The committee is elected by and responsible to the Chapter Membership. It is comprised of three members of the Chapter who are not members of the IPTA Board of Director’s Executive Committee. Members serve a term of three years, commencing on January 1, with one member elected each year during the annual Chapter elections. The committee member with seniority serves as Chair. Vacancies on the Ethics Committee are filled at the next election by electing two members to the committee. The candidate receiving the highest number of votes will complete a three year term; the candidate receiving the next highest number of votes will complete the vacated term.

Position Objective:  To assist APTA in maintaining the ethical principles and standards of conduct for its members.

Specific Responsibilities:   The Ethics Committee has two primary responsibilities: 1) To investigate complaints against members of the Chapter, and 2) To conduct disciplinary action proceedings in accordance with the procedures set forth by the APTA. The Ethics Committee monitors the information available through the Illinois Department of Professional Regulations and reports any suspected violations to the Chapter President. The Chapter President may initiate an ethics proceeding on the basis of the information publicly reported or by a written complaint received by the Chapter; however the Chapter President must consult with the Ethics Committee Chair before issuing a notice of charges to the member suspected of violation. The notice of charge refers the case to the Chapter’s Ethics Committee, who is responsible for appointing and investigator, reviewing the evidence gathered, and deciding whether to dismiss the charges or to recommend to APTA’s Ethics and Judicial Committee that impose one of the four forms of disciplinary action (reprimand, probation, suspension, or expulsion).

In addition, the Ethics Committee may provide educational opportunities to the Chapter’s membership in the form of educational programs, webinars, poster presentations, and articles in the PT Priority or on http://www.ipta.org/. Committee members may also be called upon to assist members with locating general information about ethics and professionalism or asked to research and provide consult to the Board of Directors and Assembly of Representatives on specific issues as needed. 

Time Commitment:  The amount of time dedicated to this committee is relative to the number of inquiries/complaints received by the Chapter as well as the programs and activities that the Ethics Committee chooses to undertake. Recent experience has been less than 5 ethical inquiries investigated and one educational program/poster developed in a 12 month period.

Qualifications: Must be an IPTA member in good standing.

Training and Support:  The Chapter office provides annualvolunteer orientation as well as ongoing administrative and clerical support for the committee. In addition, you will have opportunities to participate in APTA's various training opportunities that are relevant to your role.

Recourse: The IPTA places great value on the relationship between members, staff, and businesses working together to further our mission. The IPTA also recognizes that there may be occasions when conflicts arise. If such circumstance occurs, please consult with the IPTA President and Executive Director.

Evaluation: The IPTA BOD President will contact you before the completion of your term for feedback on your volunteer experience. This will be used to update this job description, develop appropriate materials, and effectively orient future IPTA volunteers.
